Golden Retriever Chow Mix Personality

Golden Retriever and Chow mix inherits both the purebred parents’ physical characteristics. Their coat is unduly dense, medium-length, wavy, thick, and non-water-repellent. They stand around 20 to 25 inches and weigh between 50 to 75 pounds. Their tails are long and curved; noses are black, snouts are brown and of medium length, and eyes are brown. They have floppy ears to the side of the face. Golden Chows may inherit Chow’s tongue, ranging from light blue to dark purple. Generally, they have a dark-spotted pink tongue. Golden Chows have thick-layered, soft, warm double coats with an attractive mane. Hence, they are fluffy puppies.

Golden Retriever Chow Mix Temperament

Chow and Golden Retriever mix is a loyal dog. They are eager to please their owners, the trait they inherited from their Golden Retriever parents. The puppy might be independent and can be stubborn with kids, pets, and strangers. It is because they have acquired Chow Chow traits.

Chowtrievers come with a pool of intelligence, making them easy-to-train! The Golden Retriever trait encourages him to make his master happy and content. In contrast, Chow Chow uses his intelligence to combat threats and offers protection to the family. Therefore, the mixed puppy may either be cuddly or a stern puppy. The mixed puppy also makes a good guard dog due to their Chow Chow gene pool.

Golden Retriever Chow Mix Training

Golden Retriever and Chow Chow mix puppies need regular core exercises. Consider hiring a professional trainer if you are a first-time dog breed owner. Although they are easy to train, a first-time dog owner may face problems due to their medium affection towards their owner in the initial days. You and your trainer will need to socialize your mixed breed to make the task more manageable and then move to obedience training. You may also learn how to train your mixed breed and consider getting a puppy. The puppies might make undesired mistakes during the training procedure and during the due course of their life. You must not adhere to punitive measures to teach them a lesson. This will make them aggressive and distrust you. Positive reinforcements and generosity are best to bond with them, and make them obedient, socialized puppies.

Golden Retriever Chow Mix Health

Golden Chow Retrievers are comparatively healthier than their parent breed. However, here are some health conditions to which they are susceptible:

Hip dysplasia: Hip dysplasia is a disorder that affects dogs during their growing phase. It causes the hip joint to relax, resulting in discomfort and dysfunction. The cartilage and bones in the dog’s hip start to wear away as he develops. This leads to arthritis, muscular atrophy, and decreased mobility over time.

Allergies: Golden Chow Retriever mixes can be allergic to various substances,  including food and pollen. If your dog licks his paws or rubs his face a great deal, get him checked by your veterinarian.

Hypothyroidism is when a dog’s metabolism is slowed due to the lack of thyroid hormone production. Symptoms are:

  • Lethargy
  • Gaining weight
  • Reluctance to work out
  • Hair Loss

Bloat: Also known as Gastric Dilatation Volvulus, is a condition in which a dog’s stomach twists when it fills with gas, food, or liquids. GDV appears out of nowhere and can progress swiftly. However, there is always a situation that requires immediate attention.

Entropion: Entropion is when the eyelid rolls inward, irritating the eyeball from eyelashes rubbing on the surface. In critical cases, entropion can cause a corneal ulcer. The treatment for this disease is surgical.

Ectropion: Ectropion is when the eyelid rolls outward, causing irritation, dryness, and damage to the eyeball and conjunctiva (the tissues surrounding the eye). The treatment for this disease is surgical.

Cataracts: As in humans, canine cataracts are characterized by cloudy spots on the eye lens that can grow gradually. Cataracts may develop at any age and often don’t damage vision, although in some cases they cause vision loss. A board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist certifies the breeding dogs after testing them free of hereditary eye disease before breeding. Usually, cataracts can be removed surgically with good results.
