Ewokian – Everything you need to know

Ewokian or the Pomenese is a hybrid of two small-sized breeds, the Pomeranian and the Havanese. Both parent breeds make for excellent companions and never tolerate solitude. Ewokian gets the name from its appearance, closely resembling Star Wars’ Ewoks.

Ewokian is a friendly, entertaining companion with a cheerful personality who adores their family. They can quickly get along well with children and other pets; however, supervision is recommended around small kids. If you are getting these furry little canines, ensure to spend sufficient time with them; else, they will develop separation anxiety and self-destructive demeanors.

Ewokian Personality

This toy-sized Ewokian mostly resembles the Havanese and can be any solid or mixed color mix. Like the Havanese, Ewokians have a round head with small erect ears that are well-covered with medium-length dense silky hair. They have a proportional muzzle with a broad black nose and shiny brown eyes. Their body is slightly elongated and more delicate-boned than the Havanese, with a feathery tail curl over the body.

Ewokian Temperament

Ewokians are extremely sweet, loving, caring, affectionate, and playful, making them excellent companions for kids and people of all ages. They are sensitive breeds who require the companionship of the family. Unlike other lap dogs, Ewokian is friendly and welcoming to outsiders.

Ewokians have medium energy levels like their parents. They are not considered as intelligent as other dog breeds; however, they are easy to train and respond well in training sessions. The most significant issue you will need to tackle in training will be separation anxiety. These dogs hate being away from their people, and they can exhibit detrimental behaviors if left alone. In addition, Ewokians are excellent apartment dwellers with low prey drives.

Ewokian Training

Ewokians love to please their owners, so you can efficiently and quickly train them. They respond extremely well to positive reinforcement, but criticism or punishment is unproductive. However, these breeds are not as inclined to misbehave as other dogs. Also, they are not as territorial and aggressive as other lap dogs, and they don’t have a detrimental streak.

Here are some recommendations for training your Ewokian:

  • Early and proper training
  • Use positive reinforcement.
  • Socialize your Ewokian in the early stage.
  • Provide mental exercises
  • Negative reinforcement or other discipline kinds can be risky and overwhelming.

Ewokians need a moderate activity level and exercise to maintain their energy. These toy breeds get most of the training during wandering and running around the house. However, take them on a quick short run or walks daily for about 30 to 60 minutes to cheer them up. Here are some outdoor activities to keep your Ewokian engaged:

  • Yard Play
  • Frisbee

Ewokian Grooming

If the Havanese parent breed is prominent, hypoallergenic quality in Ewokian increases. Havanese is an average shedder, and if the Ewokian resembles more traits of Pom, shedding may increase. However, Ewokian needs brushing regularly to prevent mats and tangles. The hair around their ears is long, and routine ear cleaning with a vet-approved solution will aid in avoiding ear infections. Trim your puppy’s nails and brush their teeth regularly. Make sure to gently wipe their eyes to prevent the formation of black discharge at the inner corners.

Major Health Concerns

Elbow Dysplasia: A painful hereditary disorder that commonly affects Ewokians. This illness is caused by variations in the maturing rates of the three elbow bones. Because of this, the joints will be loose, resulting in pain and lameness.

Hip Dysplasia: A distressing condition caused when the hip’s socket part fails to fit the ball, leading to joint dislocation. Hip dysplasia may occur at birth or an early age as hereditary. When the affected dog ages, this disorder can further expand into arthritis.

Dental Issues: Dental issues like bleeding gums, gum inflammation, cavities are common in Ewokians.

Patellar Luxation: This painful situation is slipping of the knee cap from its spot in the legs. Symptoms are that the affected dog might feel uneasy while hiking or running and kick its leg to set the knee cap on its position.

Glaucoma: Glaucoma is prevailing in both canines and humans. This eye infection can even result in blindness. In affected dogs, signs such as squinting, watery eyes, pain, and redness can be evident.

Cataracts: An affected eye will look unclear due to the appearance of a white film-like coating over the eye lens. This situation should not be left untreated as it can lead to blindness.

Allergies: Ewokian mixes can be allergic to various substances, ranging from food to pollen. If your dog licks his paws or rubs his face a great deal, get him checked by your veterinarian.

Heart Disease: This causes irregular heart murmurs and heartbeat. It can be identified through an X-ray, ECG, and in addition, dental care, medications, and weight control can aid in controlling this disease.

Other minor conditions that Ewokians are susceptible to:

  • Eye infections
  • Tracheal Collapse
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Ear infections
  • Early tooth loss
  • Porto-Systemic Shunt

Ewokian Diet and Nutrition

Providing your Ewokian with high-quality, well-balanced, nutritious dry food will aid in establishing a good foundation for their overall fitness and health. However, you should be aware of the quantity of food you are serving to your toy companion, as they can get obese. For a small breed like the Ewokian, excess weight can instantly lead to health problems. Therefore, it’s essential to consult your pet’s food quantity with your vet.

Ewokian Living Conditions

Ewokians are apartment dwellers and ideal for people in towns, cities, and countries. They are very active indoors and can be great without a backyard. Ewokian is an adaptable dog and tolerates any weather. However, most Ewokians take the traits of the Pomeranian and choose cooler climates. Suppose your dog resembles the Havanese. In that case, he will prefer warmer climates. Primarily, they need their master’s warmth and companion to maintain a proper behavioral condition.

It is essential to get a mixed breed pup from a reputed breeder who guarantees the health of the canine and their purebred parents. You must inquire about their health clearance documents and gene testing reports. Before getting an Ewokian puppy, make sure they have been vaccinated.
