English Cream Dachshund – Everything You Need to Know

An English Cream Dachshund is a rare gene mutated breed that boasts prized choices among the Dachshund variants. The spotlight of this English Cream Dachshund is its coat and color. This dog has the softest fur among its variants, and it comes in different shades of cream that range from very light or white to affluent golden cream. The chinchilla gene is responsible for the distinct cream color in the English Cream Dachshunds. They claim their ancestry from imported British Cream. Furthermore, the English Cream Dachshunds come in two varieties: Clear Coated Cream Dachshund and Shaded Cream Dachshund.

English Cream Dachshund Types

The cream coat of English Cream Dachshunds has two varieties: A clear cream coat and a cream coat with a black overlay called shaded or shading.

Clear Coated Cream Dachshund

The coat color of these Dachshunds will be light cream, and it darkens as the puppy grows. The gene of Cream Dachshunds with a clear coat will not produce darker tones near the tail or ear tips. This type of Cream Dachshund is rare as it is challenging to breed Dachshunds without pigmentations. They have a clear, luxuriant coat fancied by many worldwide.

Shaded Cream Dachshund

The dark shades on the cream coat look prominent in these types of Cream Dachshunds. They have a dark line around their eyes. The Shaded Cream Dachshunds can be identified with their almost black coat, dark nails, and whiskers at birth. In addition, it  has black hair at the end of the ears and tail giving them a distinct look. However, people often get confused with Shaded Cream to sable patterned Dachshunds.

English Cream Dachshund Personality

An English Cream Dachshund appears almost black at birth. Eventually, this coat color turns into a cream color as the Dachshunds get older. They have a narrow rectangular body, a triangular face, a muscular neck, and a head tapering to the tip of a pinkish-brown or black nose; elegant, almond-shaped, dark, black, brown, or hazel pupils, and long floppy ears. The fore and hindquarters are smaller. The chest bone is prominent with ribs; a medium-length tail that doesn’t kink or twist. The older the English Cream Dachshunds grow, the blonder they become. A blond coated English Cream Dachshund with their dense, double coat that is long, straight can look similar to a miniature Golden Retriever. Their fur is double-coated, straight or wiry, and long or short.

They bark to notify any strangeness at home and while outing, a quality that marks them as exceptional watchdogs and guard dogs. Due to this nature, they will be territorial but are never aggressive.

The English Cream Dachshunds are playful, intelligent, and can catch every pet parents’ cue.

Since they are independent and intelligent dogs, they can be stubborn sometimes.

However, the English Cream Dachshunds love their owner and exhibit utmost loyalty. Their calm nature helps them settle anywhere quickly, making them exceptionally adaptable and excellent companion dogs. Both female and male English Cream Dachshunds are a great addition to your family.

The English Cream Dachshunds thrive for attention. If there is a lack of attention, there is a possibility of them getting jealous. They socialize well with children, but supervision is recommended. English Cream Dachshund Training

The English Cream Dachshunds are easy to train because of their intelligence and people-pleasing traits. As they are barkers, it is essential to teach them to stop barking on command. They are stubborn. Ensure proper training since puppyhood to prevent any undesired behaviors. Their stubbornness might be a barrier during training sessions. Always prefer positive reinforcement, and the English Cream Dachshunds will respond very well to it. It is vital to train English Cream Dachshunds for walking on a leash and teaching them to stay in a crate if you are not willing your pet to stick to you all the time. In addition, train them not to chew, nip or bite on furniture or shoes playfully. Provide potty training to avoid peeing or pooping anywhere. Some obedience training and basic commands like sit, go, stay, shake hands while still puppies can help you for a lifetime.

English Cream Dachshund Grooming

English Cream Dachshunds need moderate grooming. Though the English Cream Dachshunds are low shedders, it would be best to brush their coat regularly using a slicker brush to avoid debris, matting, and tangles. Brushing the coat from the root to its tip helps to detangle. Trim the long hair near the ears, tails, feet, and fore chest once every three to four weeks since it grows in fringes. Bathing them once a month is sufficient as excessive bathing can dry their skin, causing dandruff. Check their eyes and ears weekly for any infections, redness, and unpleasant odor. In addition to all these, brushing teeth, trimming, and filing nails must be followed as part of grooming.

English Cream Dachshund Health

The English Cream Dachshunds are generally healthy breeds and live beyond their life span (12 to 16 years). Sometimes, a well-maintained English Cream Dachshund can live up to 25 years.

Progressive Retinal Atrophy: It affects the photoreceptors of the eye. An affected English Cream Dachshunds will eventually be blind due to the deterioration of the photoreceptors cell. It can be detected earlier; a very later stage is blindness. However, English Creams with this condition can survive for several years since they have other senses to compensate.

Canine Diabetes Mellitus: English Creams with canine diabetes mellitus cannot regulate their sugar levels as their bodies will not produce sufficient insulin. All Dachshunds, including English Cream Dachshunds, are prone to diabetes. This condition can cause excessive thirst, hunger, and urination, along with weight loss. Diabetes is curable using medication and insulin injection.

Gastric Dilatation-volvulus: A life-threatening condition that affects deep-chested dogs like English Cream Dachshunds, especially if they have an overfed meal, eat rapidly, drink excessive amounts of water, or exercise vigorously after eating. Often called bloat, this occurs when the stomach is filled due to pressure with gas or air. The dog cannot get rid of this excessive air in the stomach, resulting in blood pressure falling, and the dog might go into shock. It could be fatal without proper medical care. If your dog has a swollen abdomen, drools excessively, retches without throwing up, restlessness, lethargy, depression, and weakness with a rapid heart rate, it could be the signs of Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus. Your dog cannot vomit to get rid of excess air in his stomach, and blood flow to the heart is prevented. As a result, blood pressure lowers, and the dog goes into shock. Without immediate medical attention, the dog may die. If you notice the above symptoms, take your furry friend to the doctor as soon as possible.

Intervertebral Disc Disease: In Intervertebral disc disease, the cushion-like joints of the vertebrae will slip or break, causing the vertebrae to press hard on the spine. A few symptoms of this painful condition are that the dog will have no interest in jumping or climbing the stairs, and he might stay in one place without moving, refusing to eat. In addition, they will cry out in pain. So, get medical help immediately as this condition can lead to paralysis. The treatment varies from supplements to surgeries, depending on the severity of the disease. In addition, wrong exercises, injuries, and obesity can cause intervertebral disease.

Cancers: Cancers are one of the leading health issues affecting English Cream Dachshunds. The most common ones are:

  • Hemangiosarcoma: A dangerous type of cancer that occurs in the blood, skin, liver, and spleen.
  • Lymphoma: A serious cancer condition that affects lymphocyte cells.
