Calupoh Dog – Everything You Need To Know

Calupoh Dog, also known as Mexican Wolf Dog, is a cross between a Mexican gray wolf and a dog. These canines are native to Mexico and considered sacred to the Aztecs. In 1999, the Calupoh Dog got recognition from the Mexican Canola Federation as the third dog breed among Mexican dogs, next to Xoloitzcuintle and Chihuahua. This dog breed is somewhat similar to the larger dog breeds like Huskies and German Shepherds. The gray wolves and dogs were intentionally crossbred for centuries by the native Mexicans to acquire puppies with both species’ features.

Calupoh is a result of the genetic project created to make a historical and cultural rescue of this dog breed. The wolf symbolized collaboration and vigor, while the dogs stood for agriculture and potency. According to the breed standards, the color of the Calupoh Dog should be black. Some genetic defects are – pink eyelids and lips. It was regarded as a status symbol if you owned a Calupoh Dog.

Calupoh Dog Personality

Calupoh Dogs are large, strong, and agile dogs with nimble feet. Although it is difficult to reckon the appearance of a mixed breed, given below are some approximate descriptions of the physical appearance of this dog.

Head: The head of a fully grown Calupoh Dog is proportionate and broader than his muzzle. In puppies, the head appears a little narrower and elongated. His ears are erect and triangular, eyes are impressive yellow, almond-shaped,  and as expressive as a wolf, nose is black, and lips are darker. The jaws and dentition are well arranged with scissor bites and can also have pincer bites. His neck is strong and well defined, with a mane that grows when he reaches maturity.

Body: Calupoh Dog bears a dynamic body that resembles the equilibrium and strength of a wolf. His topline is proportionate. His withers are more elevated than the rest of his back. A sturdy rump – a little rounded with a tail that is otherwise carried at the back. The coat of Calupoh is a dense, rough, double coat that is medium in length and weather resistant. As per the breed standard, it should be black. White spots on the chest and feet and brown paws are allowed.

Forequarters and Hindquarters: Calupoh Dog has well-built shoulders that give him an elegant gait. The sturdy forequarters help him to move freely. A well-developed hindquarter holds the dog’s weight and provides a firm movement. The long legs from his wolf lineage give him the strength to prowl.

The following features are considered faults:

  • Cows’ hocks or crooked limbs
  • Non-typical coats
  • Lack of pigmentation in the lips
  • Pink-colored lips or eyelids (Severe faults)
  • Cryptorchidism (Severe faults)
  • Missing teeth (Severe faults)

Calupoh Dog Health

Calupoh Dogs are relatively healthy breeds. However, like any other mixed breed, they are prone to health issues stemming from their lineage. Thus, to keep them healthy, it is vital to take your dog to the veterinarian for regular health checkups and ensure that he is updated with vaccinations. The lifespan of a Calupoh Dog is 12 – 18 years. The only illness that a Calupoh Dog is susceptible to is Hip Dysplasia.

In addition, the cartilage and bones in the dog’s hip start to wear away as he develops. This leads to arthritis, muscular atrophy, and decreased mobility over time.

Heartworm Disease is a severe and deadly disease in pets caused by foot-long parasitic roundworms (heartworms). These worms live and multiply, affecting the heart, lungs, and the related blood vessels, leading to heart failure, lung disease, and organ damage.

Infections: Canines are prone to bacterial and viral diseases such as rabies, parvo, and distemper. You can prevent viral infection by vaccinating based on the dog’s age.

Cancer: Calupoh dog has a higher life expectancy than the other breed. Still, they are prone to cancer as they grow older. Cancer can be cured by surgical removal of tumors and chemotherapy. However, it is essential not to ignore the symptoms and diagnose them earlier.
